Belgian IPA

posted by Jon

If you've never tried a Belgian IPA, I would highly recommend trying a Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen IPA Tripel. Our January beer is loosely based on it.

Ryan and I brewed this past Thursday. Ryan Beld was also invited, but like last time, he was extremely late. He still hasn't shown up. Brewing details after the jump.

1/25/11
Yeast starter made using 1C DME, 1qt H2O and 3/4 tsp yeast nutrient. WLP545 (2nd gen Von Bora) pitched.

1/27/11
7:00 Water heated (2 Gal)

7:25 1 lb CaraPils and 1 lb Vienna grains steeped @ 155°

8:00 Grains sparged with 1/2 Gal water @ 155°

8:20 2 lbs Belgian Candi sugar & 9.3 lbs Pilsner LME added

8:52 Boil started, 1 oz Magnum hops added

9:22 1 oz Magnum hops added

9:37 1 tsp Irish moss & 1 tsp yeast nutrient added

9:42 1 oz Styrian Goldings hops added

9:52 Flameout, 1 oz Amarillo hops added

10:56 Yeast pitched @ 70°

O.G. = 1.079

This one will be dry-hopped with another 1oz of Amarillo once it is racked to the secondary.

Our projected F.G. is 1.020, which would be just under 8% ABV.
